DJ’s 2005 Toyota 4Runner has been more than just a reliable daily driver—it’s a lifeline on wheels. Purchased in late 2004, this 4Runner has seen it all, from shuttling DJ’s family of four and two dogs to serving as a crucial rescue vehicle on the beaches of southern New Jersey.

DJ, a middle school teacher by trade, has also dedicated over 30 years to ocean lifeguarding. His commitment to his community is evident in his dual role as an educator and a lifeguard, and his 4Runner plays a pivotal role in both aspects of his life.

For DJ, the 4Runner is not just a mode of transport; it’s been a reliable tow vehicle for three different boats over the years.

On the job as a lifeguard, his 4Runner transforms into a beach patrol unit, equipped with everything needed for emergency rescues.

Whether it’s extracting a victim from the water, clearing the beach during lightning storms, or simply providing shelter from the elements on inclement days, DJ’s 4Runner is always ready for action.

The magnetic signage and rescue lights can be easily removed at the end of the day, allowing the 4Runner to seamlessly transition back into family mode.

Over the years, DJ has made several modifications to enhance the 4Runner’s capability, both on and off the beach.

Starting with the suspension, a 3″ Old Man Emu lift provides much-improved ride quality as well as additional ground clearance while Amazon upper control arms allow the alignment to stay in spec.

The wide 285/70 R17 Falken Wildpeak tires offer better traction in the sand while also providing a much more beefy appearance.

On the exterior, the Viper cut front bumper and stealth-mounted NiLight 32″ light bar make the front end look more aggressive, while the Plasti-Dipped badges and roof rack give it a sleek, personalized touch.

Tinted front windows, an updated grill with Raptor lights, and a black exhaust tip round out the bold styling.

Inside, the modifications continue with a Boss Audio Apple Car Play stereo system, Ram mount for phone convenience, and a JBL subwoofer for enhanced audio experience.

The LED lighting in the dash, center console, and cabin interior creates a warm, inviting ambiance during night drives. Carbon fiber vinyl decals on the dash and interior doors add a touch of modernity and refinement, making this 4Runner as comfortable as it is capable.

When DJ is on duty, the 4Runner is rigged with essential lifeguard equipment, including a rescue board, torpedo buoys, first aid supplies, AED defibrillator, oxygen tank, emergency light, and a remote search light.
